The story picks up where The Quiet Job left off: beside the rain‑soaked mound behind the derelict rail yard where burlap‑wrapped feet once pointed skyward. Sam Blackwood returned beneath a sky heavy with threat—only to find two items laid solemnly atop the freshly tamped earth: a heavy, dark‑stained wooden bat and a worn, chalk‑white ball. No tag. No testament. Just the silent proof that Johnny “Red” Marlowe now rests six feet beneath the soil.

He knelt, his fingers brushing the barrel’s ridged tape, noting the bat’s perfect balance despite the weight of history. The ball’s seams were mottled with specks of clay—the same ochre hue of that grave’s crust. Each artifact spoke in the hush: here lies a legend silenced before the final pitch.

At first light, Sam bore the relics back to his office. He set the bat upright against the walnut grain of his Detective’s Desk, the ball imperiled on an ash‑spattered blotter. The beam of his Sentinel No. 400 carved golden arcs across their surfaces, transforming game‑day gear into grim evidence. The wiretap clicked quietly, eager to catch even a whisper of “Marlowe,” while the Detective Board gained a single new map pin—those rail yard coordinates, circled and underlined.

No one marks a grave with memorabilia unless they want it found. The final fastball never crossed home plate—it found its resting place beneath a mound Sam now knows by heart. Whoever left these here thought Sam would see the message: the strike that ended Marlowe’s career was delivered off‑field. Now it’s up to Sam to learn who held the bat and why.
